Architectural diversity is something that is often times becoming increasingly more difficult to find within suburban areas. Suburban areas are embracing the concept of tract housing; a sort of ‘one house fits all' in new construction. Through the construction of a vast array of varying styles and designs of houses, one Lincoln, Nebraska neighborhood is combating this growing trend, proving that architectural design can still be prevalent in increasingly suburban areas.
In older areas of the city of Lincoln, you can find historic and architecturally diverse houses throughout, however moving out towards newer developments, houses begin to embrace the same floor plans, without much variation. One new development though, Village Gardens, is taking on an identity of its own in the area of housing design and development by creating houses with a large catalog of architecturally influenced floor plans.
The neighborhood contains influences spanning from across the United States including:
- California Bungalows;
- Craftsman;
- Victorian;
- Spanish;
- East Coast Row Houses;
- Tudor;
- Modern Condos.

The architectural diversity within the neighborhood truly showcases a wide array of architectural interest, something hard to come by in new construction within the city of Lincoln.
This neighborhood is a true lesson in design of our suburban areas. It shows that there is a way to construct neighborhoods that are affordable and have architectural interest, all at the same time. There really is something to be said about maintaining a creative touch in the construction of our ever-growing suburban neighborhoods.
How has your area maintained its architectural integrity through new construction in its suburban areas?
