Nice, France is expecting to accelerate the construction of its second tramway line, which will run from east to west across the city. Two thousand and fifteen will be a transitional period. Notably, a committee has been created to offer damages to businesses affected by construction. It has also be announced that there are plans to plant trees along the new route.

“Two thousand and fourteen was marked by the opening of many preparatory works across Nice,” announced Philippe Pradal, the First Deputy Mayor of the city. Two thousand and fifteen will be a time for “intensification.” There will be no less than 190,000 square meters excavated, all of which must be evacuated at ground level between May 2015 and September 2016. A trench will be dug on Rue Antoine-Gautier, and the evacuation of the area will be done in chunks. Disturbances are to be expected at the Magnan intersection during the first three weeks of January, with occasional lane closures.

Damages Committee Operational by the End of January 2015

The damages committee is expected to go into effect by the end of the month of January. “This committee's goal is to support businesses that they expect to suffer losses because of the construction,” specifies Philippe Pradal.

Street Trees Bordering the New Tram Line

A community dialogue will take place in March and April to discuss the trees to be planted along the tram line. “Christian Estrosi has taken it upon himself to evaluate how citizens will be affected by the replanted trees, and to ask their input for the types of trees to planted,” explains Municipal Councilor Anne Ramos, before continuing to say, “We would like to favor large, leafy specimens so that the street remains nice and shady. This is one of the demands that our citizens consistently make.” As far as the sidewalks go, smaller-sized trees are preferred. They will be organized by species in order to create different atmospheres at varying points along the route.
