On the Beijing, China subway map, one can see subway lines break in the middle of nowhere. And the lines that connect to suburban areas have few transfer stations. Those “broken lines,” therefore, put great pressure on subway operations. Beijing has been striving to extend the broken lines in its latest subway network planning. This year, the six most discussed broken lines, including the Batong line and the Changping line, will be connected.
With the lines extended, riders will be able to reach anywhere. For example, the Fangshan line opened in 2010 has only one transfer station. This means that all passengers from the West have to transfer to line 9 in the Guogongzhuang station to go to the city center. The commuting pressure is unimaginable. If the Fangshan line is extended for 1 or 2 kilometers (0.62 - 1.24 miles) to meet with line 10, commuting will greatly improve. This example applies to many other suburban lines; therefore the line extension projects are essential.
Furthermore, the Changping line may further shorten its departure time intervals, taking advantage of the line extension projects. By the end of last year, the Changping line shortened its weekday departure time interval of evening rush hour from 5 minutes 6 seconds to 4 minutes. However, the 6 minutes 30 seconds departure time interval remained during the morning rush hour, in order not to put too much operation pressure on the Xi'erqi station and line 13. But once the Changping line extends to the South, it would be possible to further shorten its departure time interval--even during the morning rush hour. Based on theoretical calculation and planning, the initial departure time interval can be 3 minutes 20 seconds which will be further shortened to 2 minutes in the long term.
All six lines will add new transfer stations. Late last year, for example, the airport line began extending to the West. This project will take about 3 years. At the same time, line 7 began extending to the East; the line will extend about 17 kilometers (10.56 miles) to officially "pull" into the Tongzhou District, to connect with the Batong line. The Batong line, on the other side, will extend to the South this year from the current Tuqiao station to the planned Universal Theme Park for 4 kilometers (2.48 miles), thus meeting with line 7 in a new transfer station. Based on the construction planning, these "broken lines" will be entirely connected in 3 to 5 years.
