The results of the European Cities of the Future 2014 competition were announced on February 15th, 2014. 468 cities participated, including forty-six mid-sized. Thessaloniki was the one to be voted as the "Best Mid-Sized city for human capital & lifestyle."

The main criteria for this particular category were, among others, the labor force, the educational level, the number of universities, the students, the number of doctors and the quality of life. The magazine included in its survey for the first time, not only the residents of the city, but also those of the surrounding villages.

This award is considered a great honor for the city of Thessaloniki. "All the effort that the municipality and businesses have put into the transformation of the city into a more outward-looking place have been fruitful. Thanks to that award, the citizens of Thessaloniki have been reassured about the high educational level of the universities and private schools," as the deputy mayor of Economics and Entrepreneurship, Hasdai Capon, has stated.
