Distinguished Lecturer (Urban Policy and Planning)

Job Description

This position reports to the department Chair. The Urban Policy and Planning Department (UPP) at Hunter College is holding a search for a full-time, non-tenure track Distinguished Lecturer with expertise in community planning, urban design, and historic preservation. The successful candidate will play a lead role in Hunter College's effort to enhance the resources of the East Harlem community. The selected candidate will be expected to teach courses including Urban Design, Architecture or Planning. Furthermore, they will lead a graduate student seminar focused on the planning needs of East Harlem. UPP is an interdisciplinary department with two graduate programs (MUP in Urban Planning, MS in Urban Policy and Leadership) and an undergraduate Urban Studies program. The department has strong ties to the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College and to other professional schools at the college.

Required education and skills

  • Bachelor’s degree and a record of achievement in a profession or field of expertise related to teaching assignments. Also required is the ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
  • Graduate degree in urban planning, architecture or related field, practical experience with the planning process in New York City, familiarity with the East Harlem community, and a record of effective teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Written and spoken fluency in the Spanish language would be a desirable asset.
