Although Istanbul is the city which has the most green certificated buildings constructed in Turkey, other cities, such as Ankara, have unique examples also. One such example is the Gordion Shopping Mall. The Gordion Shopping Mall, whose architectural design was realized by REDEVCO, is the largest building with a BREEAM “Excellent” certification in Turkey and the first green shopping mall in Ankara.

BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) is an environmental-friendly building certification system which began being used in England during 1990 and was adopted in other countries during the following years. The aim of certification is the measurement of the building in terms of environmental sensitivity, depending on set standards.

The Gordion Shopping Mall opened in 2009 with the Breeam Excellent certification. Eighteen percent of the building’s energy needs are obtained by co-generation systems and the system efficiency is maximized by using waste heating. This makes it possible to release less carbon dioxide per square meter compared to the other shopping malls in Turkey (a reduction of nearly 4 thousand tons). After construction is completed, the location of Gordion Shopping Mall will be near the metro station line; contributing to the minimization of carbon dioxide emissions caused by visitors via transportation.

Patrick Van Dooyeweert, Redevco’s General Director, stated that green certified shopping malls are important all over the world in terms of sustainable retail. He added that green buildings are designed to consider the management, health, energy, transportation, water, material and wastes, land usage and ecology, and environmental impact. One of the most important points was the fact that anyone can design and construct green building without any extra design conception.

Such buildings are being constructed all over the world, however, is the user aware of the features of the shopping mall he or she visits? Are you conscientious about the benefits of them?
