CNU Charter Awards 2013

For over a decade, the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) has given professionals and students in architecture, landscape, and urban design the opportunity to compete across multiple categories for the annual CNU Charter Awards. The Charter Awards honor a select number of winners, honorable mentions, and two grand prize winners: one professional and one academic (student or faculty).

All submissions for the 2013 awards will be accepted digitally via the CNU Charter Awards website. The Call for Entries will close on Wednesday, January 30th, 2013. Each professional submission requires the entry fee of $250 for CNU members, and $300 per project for non-members. A student or faculty entry require just a $50 fee, and includes a one-year CNU student membership. More about these fees can be found here.

Winning projects are recognized for their excellence in fulfilling and advancing the principles of the Charter of the New Urbanism, which defines the essential qualities of walkable, sustainable places, from an entire region down to the block. These projects represent outstanding designs built to create or sustain harmony between the built environment and its physical and social contexts from around the world.

A jury of distinguished designers, architects, planners, and scholars, carefully chosen by the CNU, makes the selections. CNU Board Vice Chair Doug Farr, founding principal of Farr Associates and author of Sustainable Urbanism, will chair this year’s jury. For more information about the rest of the nine-person jury, check out this page on the Charter Awards Tumblr. Information on the judging criteria can be found here.

CNU21 LOGOAn awards ceremony will be held to honor Charter Awards winners at CNU21: Living Community, at the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Thursday, May 30, 2013. In addition to the ceremony, during the awards conference, winning work will be published in a book by CNU; considered a staple on the desks of mayors, municipal planners, government leaders, and in university libraries. Regarded as one of the preeminent global awards for excellence in urban design, the Charter Award continues to be the only interdisciplinary award that honors the full context of contemporary projects integrated within their communities.

Instructions for entry can be found here.
