The business of design is in a state of flux. The roles, the tasks and the personae of designers are changing.”

This is the key claim and thesis fueling the concepts behind the Sixth International Conference on Design Principles and Practices Conference 2012. Happening January 20-22, 2012 at the University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA), the conference will include seminars, lectures, and workshops in regards to the significance of design and where it stands in contemporary society.

According to the Design Conference website, “ is a place to explore the meaning and purpose of ‘design’, as well as speaking in grounded ways about the task of design and the use of designed artifacts and processes. is a cross-disciplinary forum which brings together researchers, teachers and practitioners to discuss the nature and future of design. The resulting conversations weave between the theoretical and the empirical, research and application, market pragmatics and social idealism.”

I am excited to see the different conclusions and theories that speakers at the conference come up with in the realm of architecture and urban design. Surely, I would expect movement away from cookie-cutter homes and strip mall development - after all, these are the epitome of architectural and urban design. It will be interesting to see what direction the Conference encourages future development.

I would expect to see the conference pushing design principles similar to those that Jane Jacobs advocated (Mixed-Use, Medium density, walkable streets). However, I would also like to see some commentary on a much more recently proposed theory for urban design - that of Edward Glaeser’s Triumph of the City (High density as a tool to relieve high cost).

Will you be attending the 2012 International Conference on Design Principles and Practices? We would love to hear your comments about the conference. Feel free to share on our Facebook page or in the comments section below.
